Ninth League Game
21st January 2012
Solent 76-68 Bracknell Cobras
Solent Kestrels v Bracknell Cobras 76-68
In what was a long and tough contest the Kestrels Under 14's came out victorious in their over-time game against the Bracknell Cobras thanks to solid team play.
The first quarter saw the Kestrels start strong, running offence and playing solid defence but a 13 - 28 score line in the second quarter saw the away Cobras take the lead and go into the half-time break 33 - 43.
Thanks to home side support the players never gave up and mounted a comeback to reduce the deficit
A 14 - 9 fourth quarter saw the Kestrels cut the lead to 5 points while a brilliant final period saw the Kestrels cut the final 5 points, including a last minute shot from Patrick Berida which could have won the game, saw this game go into over-time.
With both sides in foul trouble the Cobras couldn't keep up with the Kestrels depth and eventually went down 11- 3 and a 76 - 68 Kestrels victory.
Player of the match: Adam Riabi and his outstanding 22 points and all around solid play off the bench.

Eighth League Game
14th January 2012
Solent 45-61 Woking Blackhawks
Woking Blackhawks 61 v Solent Kestrels 45
In a game where the players felt complacent before the start the athleticism of this Woking side gave them a shock, the inability to put the ball in the hoop during the first 10 minutes made it a mighty struggle for the rest of the game after going down 17 - 5.
A slightly improved shooting quarter in the second saw the Kestrels score 10
points unfortunately the Blackhawks scored 15 taking it into the half-time break
with a lopsided 32 - 15 lead in favour of the home side.
The use of the full-court press saw the Kestrels hold back the athletic side outscoring their opponents 9 - 17 and executing well on offence.
However another period of 4 minutes without a basket saw the 4th quarter finish 20 - 13 and a 61 - 45 victory for he Woking Blackhawks. The inability to score was the problem for the Kestrels missing a total of 17 free-throws and having a total of 16 minutes combined of not scoring a single point.
Player of the match: Charlie Kendall finished with a team high 14 points and also had a few blocks that were highlight plays.
Team: P Berida (4), M Docherty (5) K Highgate (6), C Kendall (7), B Fallows (8), L Henry (9), L Buckingham (10), T Copley (11), A Riabi (12), A Marsland (13), J Pardey (14) & C Hall (15)

Seventh League Game
10th December 2011
Solent 72-36 Taunton Huish Tigers
Taunton Huish Tigers 36 v Solent Kestrels 72
After a long journey down to Taunton we were greeted by a noisy warm up from Tauntons, showing us how geared they were for the game.
Both teams started off playing full court presses, so the start of the game was quite scrappy and no real settled play. Tom, Adam and Luc all scored four
points each, helping us finish the quarter 5-14 up.
We began to settle in the second quarter but with Taunton making quick fire substitutions the fresh legs forced us to raise our game. Kieran hit a three point shot which seemed to inspire all as baskets were being shared around the whole team now. With our defence being more effective we managed to finish the half 16-36 ahead, but knew we could not let up as Taunton kept coming.
The second half we were able to run a more effective offence, meaning Luc was able to score eight points with his strong posting up. Kieran again hit another three at a crucial time to quieten down the vocal Taunton support. However, Taunton would not lie down and finished the quarter scoring 13 - 19.
Being over twenty points in front we had stopped applying a full press and by continuing to play and rotate our players we seemed to break Taunton. James, after not feeling 100% finished the game with two quick fire baskets, as well as Kieran hitting a final three, Luc scoring six points and Max four. We also managed to build our lead and prevent Taunton from scoring, finishing the quarter 7-17. With the game a close affair Kestrels were able to finish stongly and end the game winning 36-72.
Player of the match: Luc Buckingham for scoring
21 points, constantly posting up and power moving to the basket and rebounding.

Sixth League Game
3rd December 2011
Solent 98-30 Bristol Academy Flyers
Solent Kestrels 98 v Bristol Academy Flyers 30
The sixth game saw Kestrels U14s wanting to keep their unbeaten record intact
against a team who in their previous fixture had beaten Woking. We had worked hard to improve on certain areas in training the night before and hoped to put it all in to practice.
We put points on the board straight from the tip but then gave away silly fouls and took four minutes to settle. However, when we did start executing our
offence and defence we built a 25-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, with
Luc and Kieran showing the way.
We did not let up and with subs being made boys hit the floor running, scoring 20 points unanswered! It was very pleasing to see Max (6), Charlie (6) and Adam (8) take their opportunity to the full.
With the Flyers coach recording our play we knew they would come at us in the second half after finishing the first 55-15 down.
After regaining our composure Adam again took his opportunity and continued his fine play scoring another eight points over the period.
We did not want the boys to relax even with a 73-24 point lead going in to the fourth quarter, but instead to concentrate, execute and work together as a team. Tom got the ball rolling scoring two baskets in quick succession, but the scoring was shared around seven players taking the team to the brink of another high score. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case with the ball just not wanting to drop, even with multiple chances coming off of our offence in the last minute and a half.
This was a very good game executing our offence, but special praise to the team for the hard work on our defence.
Player of the match: Adam for his highest score to date of 20 points and his numerous steals during the game.

Fifth League Game
20th November 2011
Solent 65-24 UWIC Archers
UWIC Archers 24 v Solent Kestrels 65
After a long coach trip to Cardiff the Kestrels Under 14's started slowly and too a small 7 points lead at the end of the quarter 12 - 5.
After getting used to the court surface and using their significant height advantage the Kestrels started to score in bunches stretching their score to 36 scoring 24 points in the 2nd quarter and taking a 36 - 15 lead into the half-time break.
The continued rebounding presence of Luc Buckingham, Chris Hall and Charlie Kendall left the much shorter opposition without much hope on the defensive end. Holding the Archers to just 4 points in the 3rd quarter allowed the Kestrels to continue to increase the gap between the two sides taking a 54 - 19 point lead into the final quarter.
The solid scoring of Adam Riabi, James Pardey and Patrick Berida finished of the 4th quarter with another solid score line of 5 - 18 and giving the Kestrels a 24 - 65 victory.
The Kestrels managed to make it 5 wins from 5 games to start the season.
Player of the match was Luc Buckingham who again finished as the high scorer with 16 points.

Fourth League Game
12th November 2011
Solent 100-45 Surrey Heat
The Kestrels reached the 100 point mark for the first time this season with a 100 - 45 win over the Surrey Heat, the previous game between these two clubs saw a 38 - 93 finish in the Kestrels favour. A dominant first few minutes saw the quarter end with Solent up 23 to 8 behind 10 point in the first quarter by Luc Buckingham and the solid leadership of Bradley Fallows. The second quarter started slow but a full-court press allowed the team to up the tempo and score in bunches, taking a 47 - 18 lead into the half time buzzer. The 3rd quarter proved effective with the continued use of a press defence while also continuing to run Fast-Break and Strong-side effectively, the 3rd quarter was led by Patrick Berida & Kieran Highgate who used their speed and agility to create numerous fast break lay-ups. The 3rd quarter ended with the Kestrels on 74 points and needing 26 to reach 100. In the 4th quarter the Kestrels were in the hunt to reach the 100 point barrier, although this led to some scrappy play on their part the final basket was made by James Pardey who also finished with 18 points. Player of the match was Luc Buckingham for his dominating scoring in the key, finishing with a game high 27 points.

Third League Game
22nd October 2011
Solent 65-42 Dorset Storm
The third game of the season saw the team experience the atmosphere and feeling of playing at home for the first time. There was a nervous excitement in the warm up but this did not transfer to the starting five who set about executing the offence and defending very well. The team delivered in building up a 21-4 lead in the first quarter, with Chris and Bradley each posting six points each. Dorset began to find their feet and build in the game doubling their points scored in the second quarter. However, they found no answer to Kieran who was on fire hitting a three to start the quarter off and finishing with three baskets in succession. Dorset smelt an upset and slowly but surely built up momentum in the third quarter and gave voice to their supporters. The boys switched off to executing our offence and chose to play slow ball, which only played in to Dorset's hands in outscoring us 17-10. Tom was the bright light in the quarter scoring 4 points. With some choice words from the coaches the boys switched on again in every aspect of their game and set about in the fourth quarter in quieting down the Dorset momentum. It was good to see Charlie (6 points) and Chris (4) work well on offence and defence, helping the team as a whole withstand a strong finish from Dorset. The boys edged the quarter 16-13 and continued their successful start to the season,
winning 65-42.
Player of the match: Kieran Highgate for his 17 points scored, 9 coming from the second quarter where he helped keep Dorset quiet.

Second League Game
15th October 2011
Solent 76-70 Bracknell Cobras
In only their second game this season the Kestrels Under 14's won a game that was too close for comfort, holding off a 4th quarter comeback by the Bracknell Cobras to finish with a 70 - 76 victory and maintaining their perfect start to the season. Behind 20 points from Kieran Highgate and 16 from Patrick Berida the Kestrels ran a smooth offence for two solid quarters but were a little uncomfortable in quarters 1 & 4 going down 24 - 23 in the first due to the Cobras fast play and control of the rebounds. A dominant 2nd quarter by Adam Riabi (who finished with 10 points), saw the Kestrels take a 2 point lead going into half time after executing well on the offensive end while also improving the rebounding thanks to Luke, Chris and Charlie all doing a solid job of keeping the Cobras big man out of the key. The 3rd quarter saw the team go on a 28 - 12 run, showing a good understanding of the offence including the perfect execution of the strong side play which received thunderous cheers from the watching Guildford Heat, the quarter finished with Solent up comfortably 49 - 67. The 4th quarter gave the opportunity to rotate the team however a strong comeback by the Cobras reduced the deficit to just a few baskets with only minutes left to play, a 19 - 7 run by the Bracknell Cobras however was not enough to win them the game and the Kestrels came out victorious for the second time this season, final score 70 - 76. Player of the match was Chris Hall whose solid defence of the Cobras Centre played a huge part in the win, while also contributing 12 points on the offensive end.

First League Game
9th October 2011
Solent 93-38 Surrey Heat
The first game of the new season saw us travel away to Lightwater Country Park to play Surrey Heat. We went in to the game contending to be heard as they centre had a bouncy castle operating on the other side of the court curtain. The boys put everything we asked in training in to practice and ended the first quarter with a 23-7 lead. The only disappointment was Adam picking up two fouls in two minutes. We set a target of 50 points by half time but also asked the boys to keep their focus and when on the court to execute our offence. The boys achieved their target scoring 28 points to Surreys 12. The third quarter saw Surrey come out hard and pressed us hard by their extra work rate. The boys weathered the storm and scored a further 20 points. We were able to use the entire squad during the game and it was very pleasing that everybody contributed to the score. We did not quite get in to triple figures but we won 93-38. The game had no one MVP, but instead the whole team achieved this. It was also pleasing to be asked by the oppositions coach how long our squad had been together and how often they trained and to see his amazement when I told him. Still things to work on, but a great first win of the season.

U14 National League Final:
Bracknell Cobras 15 v Solent Kestrels 17
With a few more weeks training under the squad's belt we entered this tournament more confident in our offence and ready to put all our training efforts it in to practice. We started off against a spirited Bracknell Cobras team with the scores being very tight in the first two quarters - half time (10-12). The team put in to practice what we asked in the third quarter and we scored four unanswered baskets to take a lead in to the fourth quarter. We defended very well and won the game 18-23. We saw an opportunity against Surrey Heat to have confidence in the break and execute it well. We used our height advantage well and finished the first quarter 2-10 up. Asking the squad to concentrate on defence paid off in the second quarter as Surrey did not score, but we extended our lead to 2-22. Unfortunately, we switched off in the third quarter and could not hold off a spirited come back by Surrey who finished the third trailing 10-25. We asked the team to switch on again and execute the offence, which they did, not allowing Surrey to score qualifying for the final winning 10-31 The final saw a repeat of our first game against Bracknell Cobras. We were aware of three of their good players and knew it would be a tough game to win. I asked the team before the start to go and win it for us but also my Nan who had passed away that morning. The first two quarters were very close, being split by a single point, with the third by two. We went in to the fourth quarter with the game being there for either team to take control of. We were so impressed that our boys switched on in offence and defence to take a five point lead in to the last minute. Our hearts were racing as Bracknell came down the court and hit a three, leaving only 30 seconds left. We had one final offence but missed the basket and then had to get back on defence to prevent Bracknell scoring. Special praise should be given to Kieran who stole the ball and dribbled away running down the clock, resulting in us winning 17-15!Final MVP: Kieran Highgate

After one week of training this tournament was a good indicator of where we were in terms of being ready for the season. We won a close fought first game against Medway with the lead changing between each team on many occasions. The team showed great character to hold on and win the game. The second game of the tournament we came up against a very organised Kingston team who used a fast break to great effect. It was good to see the team not give up, but instead keep battling and trying to pull back the gap.In the 3rd and 4th play off we started very well and took a 14-2 lead in the first quarter. We decided to rotate the team, but unfortunately came unstuck and ended up not scoring in the second quarter and handing the lead to Feltham. However, it was great to see the team re-group, listen to instructions and begin to pull back the deficit in the 3rd quarter. We unfortunately just ran out of time, but gave us many items to work on during training sessions.
