Kestrels maintain their winning streak after a composed 65-42 win over London Thunder to solidify 2nd place in the league. Another Faith McDowall masterclass, besting her 19 points last weekend against London All Stars II with 23 points and three made shots from downtown, leading her side to the win.

Out of the blocks, the Kestrels looked sharp and clinical, with three early buckets kicking the away side into a 6-0 lead inside a minute and a half. A comfortable margin quickly fell to three points and even to just the one after Olivia Ramsey got her first points of the afternoon. Chloe Lammas instantly responded with a trip to the line, the Kestrels captain initiating another Kestrels string of momentum and ending the first quarter the same way it started, with a 6-0 run.

Kestrels then came on leaps and bounds, maintaining the advantage and then some, McDowall Dodd, Aimee Nwabisi and Earleesha Jackson providing important impact to start the second quarter. The first double digit lead came out of a London Thunder timeout, Ruth Bentley stretching it to 25-15 and slowly but surely making it a challenge for London Thunder to counter the offensive strength of the Kestrels. This point was then emphasised by Anna Idiata Mendez getting on the scoreboard with a three pointer on the very next possession. Two quick Lara Morrison buckets and Lammas’ second made shot from deep capped off a brilliant first half for the Kestrels, a 38-23 lead at the break.

Neither team came out of the half clearly the stronger, as both teams traded buckets and occasional fouls to break up the pace of the game. A very broken up third quarter looked a positive one for the home side, creating a 17-10 run and applying pressure on the Kestrels lead going into the final ten minutes. However, a fast start from Zahara Fossati-Sharples and Jackson began a 12-0 run that would almost cement the victory with five minutes left on the clock. Mendez, McDowall and Bentley added to the scoresheet before the referee blew the final whistle, leaving Kestrels on top.

Kiely Reed’s side add another tally to the win column, totalling 13 across the season and just one behind Barking Abbey in top spot.

Top Performers:

Faith McDowall – 23 points

Chloe Lammas – 11 points

This leaves the Kestrels with two games to play against Cardiff Met Archers, followed by London Cavaliers II to close out the regular season. With both games at home, we need all the voices in the Complex from the Kestrels Family to get behind the team and support them as much as possible in challenging for the league title.
