WNBL Division 2 outfit Team Solent Kestrels already faced an uphill task in Round 2 of the National Cup when they drew newly promoted Cobham Cobras who were sitting mid table in Division 1. Without 4 of their regular team, that task was made even more difficult, the inexperienced Kestrels team were unable to match up against a bigger, more experienced and talented Cobham outfit.
Kestrels were not able to register a field goal in the 1st quarter with their only scoring coming from the foul line - 29-4 at the end of Q1 and one of the Cobham team already eying up a potential double double.
The pattern continued for the remainder of the game with Sophia Agboola hustling hard on defence and Anna Idiata-Mendez continuing to make her mark at both ends of the floor as she has all season so far.
Conceding 42 offensive rebounds and 50 turnovers was always going to end up in a painful loss as Cobham ran out 92-19 winners at the SSC. Sophie Khalaf was outstanding for the visitors as she amassed 22 points, 20 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Anna Idiata-Mendez was valiant in her efforts for Kestrels, desperately trying to lead the way with 11pts and 11rebs.....definitely one to watch for the future.
Kestrels will be looking for a much improved performance when they return to National League action with a trip to London Thunder on Saturday, 9th November - 6pm.
